Use your WinMo phone like a wireless router

I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. Jorrit Jongma has put together a package for (some) Windows Mobile phones that fakes the USB Internet connection into using the 802.11 radio as a wireless access point to the Internet. Tethering your phone with USB or Bluetooth isn’t always an option. What if you want to get your Nintendo DS and a couple of laptops online while in the back of a car? Just make sure you have an unlimited data plan.

I tried it on my Sprint 8525 (HTC TyTn) and it worked great, I had everything in my house routing through my phone. It seems to cook the battery though, so you might want to keep a couple spares if you’re using it on the road. This is an incredibly useful feature, let’s hope it makes it into a future release of WinMo.

Pointui: New Windows Mobile interface app coming soon

It seems like every week there’s a new application hitting the streets that aims to turn your Windows Mobile device into an iPhone. If you really want an iPhone, you should probably just buy one. On the other hand, if you prefer Windows Mobile applications, but like the look of the iPhone program launcher, we can understand why applications like Pointui are attractive.

Pointui appears to be scheduled for a Jan 1, 2008 launch. There’s not much info available on the application’s home page yet, but there are a series of Flickr photos and the YouTube video you see above. Pointui replaces the Windows Mobile start page with a new home page that lets you launch applications by sliding from one to the next. The settings menus are also replaced by large easy to see buttons.

It’s not clear that Pointui will make it easier to use a Windows Mobile device. In fact, it appears that in some situations it could take longer to find and launch applications than it would take using the default interface. But it’s nice to have choices. One of the advantages of Windows Mobile for now is that the SDK is available, meaning there are tons of third party applications that let you customize your user experience. The iPhone SDK doesn’t come out until early next year, and somehow we doubt the first thing developers will do is try to emulate the Windows Mobile experience on the iPhone.

Windows Mobile Internet Sharing Made Easy (3G iPhone!) [Cellphones]

After tooling around with
getting internet sharing working on the
Sprint Mogul
for a bit, we discovered this small WMWifiRouter
app by Jorrit Jongma. It’s pretty much an install and run affair
(save a bit of internet connection Wi-fi setup beforehand), but the
only thing you have to watch out for is using a static IP address
on the device you want to access it with (iPhone/laptop/whatever)
because there’s no DHCP server present. There’s a good guide in the
XDA
Dev
forum as well. The result? A 3G-ish iPhone. [WMWifiRouter]

Asus M930W Smartphone Flips Out, Kills People, Has QWERTY [Cellphones]

asusm930.jpgAsus already has a full stable of Windows Mobile phones, but this flip-open QWERTY-enabled candybar seems like one we can get behind. Not only does it have a screen underneath for typing (in addition to the outside screen), it’s powered by a 520MHz CPU, has Tri-band GSM, 3G, 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM, not to mention Wi-fi and Bluetooth. As long as that keyboard underneath feels as good as it looks, this could be a killer communicator.

New Version of Live Search for Mobile

If you haven’t checked out Windows Live Search for Mobile lately, you should give it another look now that a new version has been released. This month’s update brings a number of new features and improvements, including 1-click directions for all businesses and street addresses (wow!) in the U.S.; additional details for U.S. businesses, including neighborhood, business category, cuisine (restaurants); hours of operation (when available); photos (up to two); and reviews (up to ten) for U.S. businesses. In addition, improved movie show times and critics’ ratings are available through Instant Answers. Also, all maps now have more interactivity - clicking on the maps now zooms in and out to pre-defined levels or advances to the next waypoint for routing maps. You can use Live Search on any mobile phone by visiting m.live.com from your phone’s browser. Blackberry and Windows Mobile users can download the search app from wls.live.com.
